Kubo the Komatiite

One of my better non-fractals (I hope)....

A Komatiite is a Mg rich lava flow that is charatcerized by a very particular set of structures and mineral growth patterns. There hasn't been a real on in billions of years (maybe 3 billion) when the earth was much hotter. Since Mg rich lava is so dense it has to be super hot to rise to the surface (1500 degree Celcius) and that just dosen't happen anymore. They are important to understand though since they are a good source of Nickle deposits

Kubo was a very special Komatiite. He love to play in the asthenosphere with his friends the olivine phenocryst and the clinopyxoenite. But one day mean old subducting crust came down and stirred up trouble in the upper mantle. All the mean volitile elements like the fluorine and dihydrogen oxide came in and transmineralized his friends into sparkally amphiboles and soapy serpentines. So Kubo rose though the back arc basin into the ocean that would one day be thrown on top of Austrailia and spilled gooey magma all over the nice clean ocean floor.

**Note Komatiites are actually made mostly of olivine and pyroxene anyway, and these minerals are unstable in weathering conditions, so all such lava flows become serpentine and talc in time.

Billions of years later Kubo was discovered by people and named Kambala becasue he had been metamorphosed into female lava flow and Kubo sounded to manly. Kubo didn't know how to handle his gender change and cryed tears that entered the soil and became spinifex grass.
